Discomfort in the Ball-of-foot area can be caused by improperly fitting footwear, shoes with narrow toe box areas, or even from wearing flip flops or high heels. This can inhibit the walking process and lead to extreme discomfort. Excessive pressure over time can result in a condition called metatarsalgia, where one or more metatarsals become inflamed.
